CNN —The target date for the highly anticipated inaugural crewed mission of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft has moved yet again. The update comes just days after Starliner teams reported a small helium leak in the service module of the spacecraft. Boeing designed the Starliner to rival SpaceX’s prolific Crew Dragon capsule and expand US options for ferrying astronauts to the space station. Meanwhile, Boeing’s rival under NASA’s commercial crew program — SpaceX — has become the go-to transportation provider for the space agency’s astronauts. Williams and Wilmore were already in their seats aboard the Starliner capsule May 6 when engineers found an issue and halted the launch.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Boeing's Starliner spacecraft is finally at the pad and on the eve of carrying astronauts for the first time. And, even this test flight doesn't feel like a given. Boeing is going to test the capsule's propulsion system before moving forward, so we'll see if the May 21 target holds. The coming Starliner crew flight test doesn't mean that race is back on.

CNN —The world will have to wait at least another week before the highly anticipated first crewed mission of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Starliner teams traced the leak to a flange on a single reaction control system thruster, where helium is used to allow the thrusters to fire. Both Boeing and NASA are developing tests and solutions for the leak, the release said. Meanwhile, Boeing’s rival under NASA’s commercial crew program — SpaceX — has become the go-to transportation provider for the space agency’s astronauts. The valve has since been replaced, but the new issue with the helium leak on the Boeing spacecraft that sits atop the rocket is causing further delay.

CNN —Venezuela continues to build up military infrastructure and hardware close to the border with Guyana as President Nicolas Maduro and his supporters scale up their threats to annex an oil-rich piece of Guyanese land. Guyana had called the move a step towards annexation and an “existential” threat as the specter of armed conflict loomed over the region. Using satellite imagery and social media, CSIS found that the expansion of Anacoco Island’s military base has continued. Maduro could ‘fall victim to own rhetoric’The threats to Guyana have concerned its partners. “Thus, one of the most concerning possibilities is that Maduro will fall victim to his own rhetoric.

Beethoven’s hair reveals lead poisoning

CNN —Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” is one of the first songs I learned to play on the violin. While his doctor’s notes were lost to time, scientists sequenced Beethoven’s genome from locks of his hair last year. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesA new analysis of Beethoven’s hair has shown the composer experienced lead poisoning toward the end of his life. Tests revealed incredibly elevated levels of lead, as well as arsenic and mercury, in two of his locks, likely from drinking wine that was sweetened with lead. Researchers don’t believe lead poisoning would have been enough to kill him, but it could have contributed to the composer’s well-known gastrointestinal issues and deafness.

I loved my ex almost immediately, but he wanted kids, and I didn't. I wondered how much doubt about having kids was normal. When Cristabelle Garcia and her ex had differing desires about wanting kids, they parted ways. US President Joe Biden speaks about student loan debt relief at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, Wisconsin, April 8, 2024. The aid package is narrowerBiden's 2020 campaign promise to erase student debt was thwarted at the Supreme Court in June. Biden had tried to forgive the debt of nearly all 40 million federal student loan borrowers, with many people getting up to $20,000 in cancellation. As a result, for critics of broad student loan forgiveness, Biden's new plan looks a great deal like his first. Biden's first forgiveness plan was based on the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act, or HEROES Act, of 2003.

Around 7 p.m. — about two hours after we arrived — doctors explained our mother had an aortic dissection, a tear in the body's largest artery. She was rushed into emergency surgery, which lasted until 4 a.m.That night, Julio and I were just worried about whether our mother would make it. Watching our mom go through emergency surgery was terrible. We decided, with our doctor's blessing, to do the surgery on the same day. After seeing our sisters and mother go through emergency surgery, just waking up each day and seeing the sunshine is a blessing.

The groups affected include:— Borrowers whose loan balances have ballooned because of interest would have up to $20,000 of their interest balance canceled. The plan would waive the entire interest balance for borrowers considered “low- and middle-income” who are enrolled in the administration’s income-driven repayment plans. The interest forgiveness would be a one-time benefit, but would be the largest relief valve in the plan. — Borrowers with undergraduate student debt who started repaying their loans more than 20 years ago, and graduate students who started paying their debt 25 or more years ago, would have their debts canceled. Students who attended institutions or programs that left them with mounds of debt but bleak earning or job prospects would also be eligible for relief.

CNN —Arnold Schwarzenegger has shared a photo of himself days after revealing he’d had a pacemaker fitted, as he confirms he will be “ready” to start filming next month. In 1997, he underwent a pulmonic valve replacement, which helps blood flow from the heart to the lungs. In 2018, he then had open-heart surgery to replace the aging pulmonic valve that had been inserted. Two years later, he had surgery to replace his aortic valve, which helps blood flow out of the heart to the rest of the body. With this latest procedure, Schwarzenegger said on the podcast that doctors advised him to get the pacemaker “because some scar tissue from my previous surgery had made my heartbeat irregular” for several years.

There are more heavily trafficked routes across the Baltimore Harbor than the Francis Scott Key Bridge. AG Letitia James plans to go after Trump's cash and property if he doesn't pay his civil fraud debt. Is the ball in Letitia James' court? "The burden is on Letitia James to find Trump's assets" and decide what she wants garnished or auctioned, he said. D'Orazio predicts James would first target the cash that Trump and the Trump Organization keep in New York-registered bank accounts. He would then remit $95 million to the Attorney General's Office, and that would go toward paying Trump's judgment.

The Supreme Court sided with the government on Friday, narrowly interpreting a provision of a landmark criminal justice law in a decision likely to limit the number of federal prisoners who are eligible for reduced sentences for nonviolent drug crimes. The majority opinion, written by Justice Elena Kagan, concluded that a criminal defendant must meet a series of criminal history conditions to qualify for relief. A failure to meet any of the criteria, she wrote, would render a prisoner ineligible. The case focused on who is eligible for shorter prison sentences under the First Step Act, bipartisan legislation passed in 2018 to address the human and financial costs of the country’s booming prison population. Under a provision known as the “safety valve,” judges can disregard federal mandatory minimum sentences for people with limited criminal history convicted of certain nonviolent drug offenses.

The decision to blow open five tank cars and burn the toxic chemical inside them after a freight train derailed in Eastern Ohio last year wasn't justified, the head of the National Transportation Safety Board told Congress Wednesday. “There was another option: let it cool down.”However, that information was never relayed to Ohio Gov.
